Stories of Help and Hope

Gina's Story

Every day, Catholic Charities staff members see single parents who have been abandoned by their spouses or partners, but are determined to raise their children the best they possibly can. "Gina's" husband left her in the early stages of her pregnancy. Although she was frightened for herself, for the future of her child, and by the thought of raising a child entirely alone, Gina knew that she did not want to have an abortion. A compassionate Catholic Charities staff member was able to reassure Gina that the Catholic fatih community would not abandon her. Catholic Charities provided Gina with emergency assistance to meet some of her basic needs. Also, through the First Step program, Gina received items to help her prepare for her new baby.

Gina gave birth to a baby boy nearly 8 months ago, and continues to receive case management services through Catholic Charities' First Step program.

A Memorable Thanksgiving

A Catholic Charities case worker recently met "Jennifer," a gregarious, pretty young woman, during a hospital visit. The case worker learned that nine years earlier, Catholic Charities had provided Jennifer with Thanksgiving dinner for herself and two daughters, one of who had since passed away. Jennifer was quick to point out that because Catholic Charities arranged a delicious dinner for her family, that particular Thanksgiving was the most memorable for her.
